ABOUT
Human EGF protein - E. coli -expressed, tag-free, carrier-free
Recombinant human (h)EGF is a high-quality and biologically active cytokine, validated using proprietary EGF reporter cells. This member of the growth factor cytokine superfamily is produced in E. coli and thoroughly purified to remove endotoxins.
Recombinant human EGF can be used together with HEK-Blue™ hEGF cells for the screening of inhibitory molecules, such as Cetuximab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the EGF receptor (EGFR) (see figures).
Key features
- Each lot is validated using HEK-Blue™ EGF cells
- Endotoxin ≤ 0.1 EU/µg
- 0.22 µm sterile-filtered
Applications
- Standard for hEGF detection and quantification assays
- Screening and release assays for antibodies blocking EGF signaling
- Screening and release assays for engineered EGF proteins
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a member of the growth factor cytokine family that regulates cellular proliferation, differentiation, migration, and survival. Thereby, EGF is involved in diverse physiological processes, including placental and embryonic development, wound healing, and maintenance of gut epithelial homeostasis. Dysregulated EGF expression or activating EGFR mutations leading to sustained pathway activation and uncontrolled cellular proliferation are frequently associated with cancer, notably colorectal carcinoma.

EGF background
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a member of the growth factor cytokine family that regulates cellular proliferation, differentiation, migration, and survival [1]. Thereby, EGF is involved in diverse physiological processes, including placental and embryonic development, wound healing, and maintenance of gut epithelial homeostasis [1]. The binding of EGF to its receptor EGFR (also termed ErbB1 or HER1) induces receptor conformational changes and autophosphorylation of cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase domains, triggering downstream signaling cascades, including STAT3, PI3K, and MAPK pathways [1].
Owing to its role in tissue repair, recombinant EGF-based medicines have been developed for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, burns, and skin grafts [2]. Conversely, dysregulated EGF expression or activating EGFR mutations leading to sustained pathway activation and uncontrolled cellular proliferation are frequently associated with cancer, notably colorectal carcinoma [3].
Cetuximab, an anti-human EGFR monoclonal antibody, is FDA-approved for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer and metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck [4].
